Population Within a Distance Calculator NZ

This works out how many people live within a chosen distance of any of the 2,210 published statistical areas in New Zealand, and how that number has changed since 2022. It is the question behind a lot of decisions that are usually made on a hunch: whether a suburb has enough people around it to support a shop, how many households a service could reach from one depot, whether an area is filling up or emptying out, or simply how built up somewhere is compared with somewhere else. The figures come from the Stats NZ population grid, which spreads official population estimates across one kilometre cells across the whole country. Two things to hold onto before you read a number off it. These are modelled estimates rather than people counted, so they describe a place well at scale and less well the smaller the circle gets, which is why the calculator refuses to answer below a two kilometre radius. And a radius is a straight line: draw a ten kilometre circle on central Auckland and a good deal of it is harbour.

How it works

Stats NZ publishes a population grid: the country divided into one kilometre squares, each carrying a modelled estimate of how many people live in it, for 2022 through 2025. This calculator takes the centre of the area you pick, measures the straight-line distance to the centre of every one of the 58,680 cells, and adds up the population of every cell whose centre falls inside your radius. It runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you enter is sent anywhere. Summed over the whole country the 2025 cells come to about 5.33 million, which is the published national population estimate, and that agreement is the simplest check that the grid and the arithmetic are both behaving.

Worked example

Take the Queen Street area in central Auckland with a five kilometre radius, which are the settings the calculator opens with. Sixty-seven grid cells have their centre inside that circle, and their 2025 estimates add up to about 173,000 people. The same circle in 2022 held about 168,200, so it has gained roughly 4,900 people, just under three per cent in three years. Widen the radius to ten kilometres and it reaches about 611,000, and to thirty kilometres about 1.68 million, which is most of the Auckland region. Narrow it to one kilometre and the calculator will not give you a figure at all, because only three cells fall inside and a single modelled cell would be a third of the answer.

Why a straight line is the wrong shape for some places

The calculation is honest about what it measures, but a circle is a poor model of how far away somewhere really is. Central Auckland is the clearest case: a ten kilometre circle drawn on Queen Street takes in a large part of the North Shore, which is ten kilometres away across the Waitematā Harbour and considerably further by road unless you are on the bridge. Wellington has the same problem with its harbour and its hills, and Tauranga with its inlet. If you are using this to think about a trade area or a delivery radius, treat the figure as the population that exists nearby rather than the population that can easily reach you, and be more careful the more water and hillside there is in the picture.

Where the estimates are weakest

A modelled grid is built by taking population estimates for larger areas and distributing them across cells using whatever indicators the model uses. That works well when you add up many cells and less well when you rely on a few, because the model's assumptions about how population spreads within an area stop averaging out. That is the reason for the two kilometre floor and the eight cell minimum: below that the answer is telling you more about the model than about the place. It is also worth remembering that these are estimates for a date, not a Census count, and that the Census figures on the suburb pages are counted people and will not match exactly.
