Does ethical investing cost you money?

The fee difference does, reliably. The return difference is genuinely uncertain and has run both ways over different periods. On the worked example a screened fund charging 0.40% against 0.25%, with a 0.20% annual return shortfall, costs 0.35% a year, which is $175.00 on $50,000.00 in the first year and $20,175.02 over twenty-five years. Change the return assumption and the answer changes with it, which is why it is an input here rather than a claim.

How much more do screened funds charge?

It varies, and the direction is consistent: screening costs money to run. Someone has to define the criteria, research every holding against them, apply exclusions and keep the list current, and that work is paid for out of the fee. On the worked example the difference is 0.15%, or $75.00 a year on $50,000.00. Check the actual figures on both funds' documents rather than assuming a typical gap.

How much does a screened fund need to outperform to break even?

Exactly its fee disadvantage. On the worked example that is 0.15% of gross outperformance a year, which is a smaller hurdle than most people assume. If a screened fund's excluded sectors have a poor decade, it clears that easily. If they have a strong one, it does not. Neither outcome is predictable, which is the honest position.

Do screened funds perform worse?

Sometimes, and sometimes better. Excluding sectors makes a fund different from the market, and different means it will lead in some periods and lag in others depending on how the excluded sectors do. Anyone stating confidently that screening costs return, or that it adds return, is arguing rather than measuring. This calculator takes the difference as an input so you can test a range instead of accepting either claim.

What does screening cost over a lifetime?

On the worked example, $20,175.02 over twenty-five years on a $50,000.00 investment, which is 7.88% of the balance the unscreened fund would have reached. Over thirty years it is $33,290.68. The cost compounds, so it grows faster than the horizon does, and the figure is worth knowing precisely because it is large enough to be a real decision rather than a rounding error.

Is screening the same as ESG?

Not quite, and the distinction matters when comparing funds. Screening excludes companies or sectors on stated criteria, such as tobacco, weapons or fossil fuel extraction. Broader responsible investing approaches may tilt towards better-rated companies rather than excluding anything, or engage with companies instead. Two funds described similarly can hold very different things, so read what each one actually excludes before comparing costs.

Does a screened fund change my risk?

Usually yes, and it is not priced here. Excluding sectors leaves the remaining holdings a larger share of the fund, so a screened fund is generally more concentrated than its unscreened equivalent and its sector mix differs. That changes how it behaves rather than simply making it cost more, and a sector or concentration check on both funds is worth doing alongside this comparison.

Should I choose the cheaper fund?

That is not a question a calculator can answer. What this page does is turn a values decision into a priced one, so it can be made deliberately. Plenty of people will see the number and keep the screened fund, which is a coherent position once the cost is known. The only poor outcome is holding either fund without knowing what the choice involves.

What is the difference between characters and characters without spaces?

Characters includes every single character in your text: letters, numbers, punctuation, and spaces. Characters without spaces excludes all whitespace (spaces, tabs, newlines). Most social media platforms count all characters including spaces, so use the 'with spaces' number when checking limits.

What is the character limit for Twitter/X?

Twitter/X allows 280 characters per post. URLs are shortened to 23 characters regardless of length. Emojis count as 2 characters each. Mentions (@username) count toward the limit. Premium users may have higher limits.

What is the Instagram caption character limit?

Instagram captions can be up to 2,200 characters. However, captions are truncated after approximately 125 characters in the feed, with a 'more' link to expand. Hashtags count toward the limit. You can include up to 30 hashtags per post.

How many characters does an SMS allow?

A single SMS message allows 160 characters using standard GSM encoding. If you use special characters or emojis, the limit drops to 70 characters per segment. Messages longer than one segment are concatenated, with each additional segment allowing 153 characters (7 are used for concatenation headers).

Does this tool count emoji characters correctly?

This tool counts emojis as JavaScript sees them, which may differ from platform-specific counting. Most emojis are counted as 2 characters by Twitter. For precise platform-specific counts, check each platform's own character counter.

What is colour blindness?

Colour blindness (colour vision deficiency) is a reduced ability to distinguish between certain colours. The most common type is red-green colour blindness, which affects approximately 8% of men and 0.5% of women of Northern European descent. It is usually inherited and caused by an absence or malfunction of colour-sensitive cone cells in the retina.

Is this test a medical diagnosis?

No. This is a screening tool only. Online tests cannot replicate the controlled lighting and calibrated colour conditions of a clinical Ishihara test. If this test suggests colour vision deficiency, consult an optometrist or ophthalmologist for a proper clinical assessment using standardised Ishihara plates or the Farnsworth D-15 test.

What are the types of colour blindness?

The main types are: Protanopia (no red cones, red appears dark), Deuteranopia (no green cones, most common), Protanomaly (reduced red sensitivity), Deuteranomaly (reduced green sensitivity, most common form overall), Tritanopia (no blue cones, very rare), and Achromatopsia (total colour blindness, extremely rare). Red-green deficiency accounts for approximately 99% of all colour vision deficiency.

Can colour blindness be cured?

There is currently no cure for inherited colour blindness. However, special EnChroma or Pilestone glasses can enhance colour perception for some people with red-green deficiency. Gene therapy research is ongoing. Acquired colour vision deficiency (from disease, medication, or aging) may sometimes be treatable by addressing the underlying cause.

Does screen brightness affect the test?

Yes. For the most accurate results, set your screen brightness to maximum, use your screen in a well-lit room (avoid direct sunlight on the screen), and ensure your display's colour settings are set to default (no night mode, blue light filter, or colour correction). Different screens display colours differently, which is why this is a screening tool, not a clinical test.

Why use lorem ipsum instead of real text?

Lorem ipsum allows designers and developers to focus on layout, typography, and visual design without being distracted by readable content. Real text draws the viewer's attention to the meaning rather than the design. The pseudo-Latin text is close enough to natural English in letter distribution and word length to give a realistic impression of how the final content will look.

Words are counted by splitting text on whitespace (spaces, tabs, newlines). Multiple consecutive spaces are treated as a single separator. Hyphenated words like 'well-known' count as one word. Numbers and abbreviations each count as one word.

What is the character limit for social media posts?

How is reading time estimated?

Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute, which is the average adult silent reading speed for non-fiction. A 1,000-word article takes approximately 5 minutes to read. Speaking time (for presentations) is estimated at 130 words per minute.

How are sentences counted?

Sentences are counted by the number of sentence-ending punctuation marks: periods (.), question marks (?), and exclamation marks (!). Abbreviations like 'Dr.' or 'e.g.' may cause slight overcounting. Ellipses (...) are counted as one sentence ending.

How are paragraphs counted?

Paragraphs are counted by splitting text on blank lines (two or more consecutive newlines). A single block of text with no blank lines counts as one paragraph. Empty lines between paragraphs are the standard separator.

What is a 16:10 aspect ratio?

A 16:10 aspect ratio means the width is 1.6 times the height. For every 10 units of height there are 16 units of width. It is sometimes written as 8:5 (the simplest whole-number form). How do I calculate the height for a 16:10 aspect ratio from a given width?

Divide the width by 1.6 (or equivalently multiply by 10 then divide by 16). For example, a width of 1920 pixels gives a height of 1920 / 1.6 = 1200 pixels. To find the width from a height, multiply the height by 1.6. For example, a height of 900 pixels gives a width of 900 x 1.6 = 1440 pixels.

What is the difference between 16:10 and 16:9?

Both ratios have the same width component (16 units) but 16:10 is taller: the height is 10 units versus 9 units in 16:9. How do you convert the result to arcseconds?

Multiply the angle in radians by 206,265, since one radian equals about 206,265 arcseconds. For example 6.71 times 10 to the minus 6 radians is about 1.38 arcseconds. Arcseconds are the usual unit for telescope resolution and for the separation of double stars.

Why does a bigger aperture resolve more detail?

Because resolution improves as the aperture diameter grows. The limiting angle is inversely proportional to the diameter, so doubling the aperture halves the smallest angle you can resolve and reveals finer detail. This is the main reason larger telescope mirrors and camera lenses see sharper.

How do I find the missing dimension while keeping the aspect ratio?

For uncompressed audio (PCM, WAV, AIFF), the formula is: File size in bytes = Sample rate (Hz) x Bit depth (bits) x Number of channels x Duration (seconds) / 8. For example, a 3-minute stereo recording at CD quality (44,100 Hz, 16-bit, 2 channels) produces 44100 x 16 x 2 x 180 / 8 = 31,752,000 bytes, approximately 30.3 MB. The division by 8 converts bits to bytes. WAV and AIFF files store audio using this raw PCM method with a small header, so the file size is very close to the raw calculation.

How is the file size of a compressed audio file calculated?

For compressed formats such as MP3, AAC and OGG Vorbis, the file size depends on the bitrate chosen during encoding rather than on the original sample rate and bit depth. The formula is: File size in bytes = Bitrate (bits per second) x Duration (seconds) / 8. A 3-minute MP3 at 128 kbps is 128,000 x 180 / 8 = 2,880,000 bytes, roughly 2.75 MB. Higher bitrates produce better audio quality but larger files. Typical bitrates are 64 to 96 kbps for spoken word and 128 to 320 kbps for music.

Which audio format gives the smallest file size for music?

Compressed formats such as OGG Vorbis and AAC (Advanced Audio Codec) generally produce smaller files than MP3 at the same perceived quality level. For example, an OGG file at 128 kbps often sounds comparable to an MP3 at 192 kbps, resulting in a smaller file. Lossless compression formats such as FLAC reduce file sizes by around 50 to 60 percent compared with WAV, without any quality loss. How much bandwidth do I need for 100 users?

Multiply the number of users by the average bandwidth each one uses at peak time. If each of 100 users needs 5 Mbps, the total is 500 Mbps. In practice, not all users are active at once, so a contention ratio of 50 to 80 percent is often applied for office networks.

What is throughput versus bandwidth?

Bandwidth is the maximum capacity of a connection in megabits per second. Throughput is the actual data transferred per unit of time, which is almost always less than bandwidth due to protocol overhead, latency, congestion and retransmissions. This calculator uses bandwidth as a theoretical maximum for throughput.

How do I calculate the speed needed to transfer 1 GB in 2 minutes?

Convert 1 GB to megabits: 1,000 MB times 8 equals 8,000 megabits. Divide by the time in seconds: 2 minutes is 120 seconds, so 8,000 divided by 120 equals about 66.7 Mbps. This calculator does that arithmetic for you in the throughput section.

What is the bandwidth-delay product?

The bandwidth-delay product (BDP) is the amount of data that can be in transit on a network path at any one moment. It equals the link bandwidth multiplied by the round-trip time (RTT). For example, a 100 Mbps link with a 50 ms RTT has a BDP of 100,000,000 bits/s x 0.050 s = 5,000,000 bits (625,000 bytes or 625 KB). This value tells you how large the TCP receive window needs to be to keep the link fully utilised.

Why does BDP matter for TCP performance?

TCP uses a sliding window mechanism: the sender can only have a certain amount of unacknowledged data in flight at once. If the TCP receive window is smaller than the BDP, the sender must stop and wait for acknowledgements before sending more data, leaving the link under-utilised. Setting the receive window to at least the BDP value ensures the sender can keep the pipe full at all times. On high-bandwidth or high-latency links (often called 'long fat networks' or LFNs), a small default window of 64 KB can be a severe bottleneck.

How do I measure my network RTT?

Round-trip time (RTT) is the time for a packet to travel from your host to the remote destination and back. The simplest way to measure it is with the ping command: open a terminal and type 'ping hostname' or 'ping IP address'. The average value in the ping output is your RTT in milliseconds. For a more accurate baseline, ping several times and average the results, or use tools such as mtr or traceroute for per-hop latency. Your RTT will vary depending on distance, congestion, and routing.

What is Base32 used for?

How is Base32 different from Base64?

Is Base32 secure?

What is Base64 used for?

Base64 is used to safely transmit binary data over channels that only handle plain text, such as email (MIME attachments), embedding images directly in HTML or CSS as data URIs, storing binary data in JSON, and encoding credentials in HTTP Basic Authentication headers. It converts arbitrary bytes to a set of 64 printable ASCII characters.

Does Base64 encrypt data?

No. Base64 is an encoding scheme, not encryption. Anyone who receives Base64-encoded text can decode it trivially. If you need to protect the data, you must encrypt it first and then optionally encode the ciphertext in Base64 for transport. Never treat Base64 as a security measure.

Why does Base64 output end with = or ==?

Base64 works on groups of 3 input bytes (24 bits) and converts them to 4 Base64 characters. If the input is not a multiple of 3 bytes, padding characters (=) are added at the end to make the output a multiple of 4 characters. One = means one byte of padding was needed; two == means two bytes.

How does binary addition work?

Binary addition follows the same column-by-column process as decimal addition, but with only two digits (0 and 1). The rules are: 0 + 0 = 0, 0 + 1 = 1, 1 + 0 = 1, and 1 + 1 = 10 (binary for 2, which means write 0 and carry 1). When a carry is involved, 1 + 1 + 1 (carry) = 11 in binary (write 1 and carry 1). You work right to left, adding the digits in each column plus any carry from the previous column.

What is 1101 + 1011 in binary?

1101 (binary) is 13 in decimal and 1011 (binary) is 11 in decimal. Their sum is 24 in decimal, which is 11000 in binary. What are the four rules of binary addition?

The four fundamental rules of binary addition are: (1) 0 + 0 = 0, (2) 0 + 1 = 1, (3) 1 + 0 = 1, and (4) 1 + 1 = 10 (i.e. 0 with a carry of 1 to the next column). A fifth rule applies when a carry is present: 1 + 1 + 1 = 11 (i.e. 1 with a carry of 1). How does binary division work?

Binary division works the same way as decimal long division, but with only two digits: 0 and 1. You work through the dividend from left to right, bringing down one bit at a time. At each step you ask whether the divisor fits into the current partial remainder. If it does, write 1 in the quotient and subtract the divisor; if it does not, write 0. The process continues until all bits of the dividend have been processed. Any remaining partial remainder is the binary remainder.

What is the remainder in binary division?

The remainder in binary division is the value left over after the divisor has been subtracted as many whole times as possible from the dividend. For example, dividing binary 1101 (13) by 10 (2) gives quotient 110 (6) with remainder 1 (1), because 13 divided by 2 is 6 remainder 1. The remainder is always less than the divisor.

Can I divide binary numbers with a remainder of zero?

Yes. When the dividend is exactly divisible by the divisor, the remainder is 0 (binary 0). For example, binary 1100 (12) divided by 11 (3) gives quotient 100 (4) with remainder 0. The calculator will show a remainder of 0 in both binary and decimal in this case.

How does binary multiplication work?

Binary multiplication follows the same long-multiplication process as decimal, but is simpler because each digit (bit) is either 0 or 1. For each bit in the multiplier (bottom number), you either write a copy of the multiplicand (if the bit is 1) or a row of zeros (if the bit is 0), shifted left by the position of that bit. Once all partial products are written, you add them together using binary addition. The result is the product in binary.
