This subscript generator converts the text you type into small subscript characters, the kind that sit below the line in chemical formulas such as H₂O and CO₂ and in maths notation like x₁ and x₂. The output is built from real Unicode characters rather than word-processor formatting, so you can copy it and paste it anywhere plain text is accepted: social media bios and posts, usernames, spreadsheets, chat messages, code comments and forums that strip normal formatting all keep the small characters intact. Type or paste your text into the box and the result updates instantly, along with a count of how many characters were converted, and the copy button grabs the whole result in one click. One honest limitation is worth knowing: Unicode only defines subscript forms for the ten digits, common maths symbols like plus, minus, equals and brackets, and seventeen letters, so the letters b, c, d, f, g, q, w, y and z have no standard subscript version. Where a character has no small form the generator leaves the original in place rather than dropping it, so your text stays readable. Capital letters convert to the same small forms because Unicode has no capital subscripts. Letters with no subscript form (b, c, d, f, g, q, w, y and z) are kept as typed. Spaces are passed through and not counted.
Subscript characters sit below the baseline, like the 2 in H₂O or the 1 in x₁. The generator replaces each character of your text with its Unicode subscript equivalent: the digits 0 to 9 become ₀ to ₉, the symbols plus, minus, equals and round brackets become ₊, ₋, ₌, ₍ and ₎, and the letters a, e, h, i, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, r, s, t, u, v and x become their small forms such as ₐ, ₑ and ₓ. Because these are genuine characters and not styling, the result survives being pasted into plain-text fields where bold, italics and true rich-text subscript are stripped out. Characters without a subscript form are left exactly as you typed them, and the counters under the result show how many characters were converted and how many were left unchanged so you can see at a glance whether your text converted cleanly.
The default text is x1 + x2. Every character there has a subscript form: x becomes ₓ, the digits become ₁ and ₂, and the plus sign becomes ₊, giving ₓ₁ ₊ ₓ₂ with all five non-space characters converted and none left unchanged. For a chemical formula you usually only want the numbers lowered: to write H₂O, convert just the 2 on its own to get ₂, then paste it between the H and the O. Try converting the word "subscript" itself and you will see the limitation in action: the letters s, u, r, i, p and t all convert, but b and c stay full size because Unicode has no subscript forms for them.
