How does glitch text work?

Glitch text, often called Zalgo text, is ordinary text with Unicode combining marks stacked onto each letter. Combining marks are the accents and diacritics used by the world's writing systems, and each one is defined to attach to the character before it rather than take its own space. Stack several above, through and below one letter and the result looks corrupted, yet it is still plain text you can copy, paste and delete like any other characters.

Will glitch text paste correctly everywhere?

Most modern browsers, phones and chat apps render combining marks, so the effect survives in Discord messages, social bios and comments. Some platforms strip or limit combining marks, username fields often reject them, and single-line boxes can clip the tall stacks. Rendering also varies between fonts, so the same glitch text looks messier on some devices than others. Paste a short test into the platform you care about before committing to it.

Why does the same input always produce the same glitch text?

This generator picks marks by stepping through its mark lists in a fixed repeating pattern rather than choosing randomly, so identical text at identical settings always gives an identical result. That makes a glitched name or tag reproducible later. For a different look at the same intensity, change the position setting or alter the text slightly and the pattern shifts with it.

Heavily glitched text is hard work for screen readers, which may announce every mark one by one, so keep it for decoration and never for information people must not miss.

How it works

Every mark stacked on the letters is a real Unicode combining character, a mark defined to attach to the character before it rather than occupy its own space. The generator keeps three lists: 24 marks that sit above a letter, 9 that strike through the middle, and 24 that hang below. For each letter you type it appends a fixed number of marks from each list, set by your intensity: Mild adds 1 above and 1 below, Medium adds 2 above, 1 through the middle and 2 below, and Heavy adds 4 above, 2 through the middle and 4 below. The position setting switches each of the three lists on or off. The picks follow a fixed repeating pattern rather than random choice, so the same text at the same settings always produces exactly the same output, which is handy when you want to reproduce a glitched name or tag later. Spaces and line breaks are never glitched, so your word boundaries stay readable no matter how heavy the distortion gets.

Worked example

Leave the defaults in place: the word Calculate, Medium intensity, marks above, middle and below. Calculate has 9 letters and no spaces. Medium intensity attaches 2 marks above, 1 mark through the middle and 2 marks below every letter, which is 5 combining marks per letter and 9 x 5 = 45 marks in total. The output therefore contains the 9 original letters plus 45 combining marks, 54 characters overall, and renders as C̢̟̬̀̅a̷̫̥̐́l̸̯̫̿̽ç̘̭̿̓ủ̷̦̫̂l̢̠̘̅̿a̷̠̥̽̑t̶̫̞̾̋ê̢̖̟̓. Switch the intensity to Heavy and the same word carries 10 marks per letter for 99 characters in total; drop it to Mild and it falls to 2 marks per letter and 27 characters. The counts matter on platforms with character limits, because every combining mark counts towards the limit even though the glitched word still reads as nine letters.
