What Is the 16:10 Aspect Ratio?
The 16:10 aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between the width and height of a rectangle, where the width is 16 units for every 10 units of height. It simplifies to 8:5 in lowest terms. As a decimal, the ratio is 1.6, meaning width divided by height always equals 1.6.
This ratio became the standard for laptop displays and many desktop monitors in the mid-2000s. It fell out of favour as consumer television manufacturing pushed 16:9 as the dominant standard, but many professionals, developers, and power users prefer 16:10 for the extra vertical screen space it provides.
The Formula
The relationship is simple:
- Height from width: height = width × (10 / 16) = width / 1.6
- Width from height: width = height × (16 / 10) = height × 1.6
- Area: area = width × height
For example: a 1920 px wide display has a 16:10 height of 1920 / 1.6 = 1200 px. A 1440 x 900 px screen is confirmed as 16:10 because 1440 / 900 = 1.6.
Worked Example

- Height = 1920 / 1.6 = 1200 px
- Area = 1920 × 1200 = 2,304,000 px
- Scale factor = 1920 / 16 = 120 (so height = 10 × 120 = 1200)

The 16:10 ratio suits tasks where vertical content matters. A longer visible page means fewer scrolls when reading documents, coding, or browsing. Spreadsheet and image editing workflows benefit from seeing more rows at once. Many modern premium laptops, particularly those aimed at creative professionals, have returned to 16:10 after years of 16:9 dominance.
For video content, 16:10 content will show letterbox bars when displayed on a 16:9 screen (or pillarbox bars the other way). For web and app design, designing at 16:10 ensures layouts still look good on both wider 16:9 and taller 16:10 viewports.
