Free to Paid Conversion Calculator

Free to paid conversion rate is the share of your free users who upgrade to a paying plan, and it is the metric that decides whether a freemium model actually makes money. This calculator takes the number of free users you have and the number who upgraded to paid, then returns the conversion rate as a percentage along with the count of users who stayed on the free plan. The inputs are simple, the total free users and the paid upgrades, and the output is the percentage who became customers. Founders, product managers and growth teams across New Zealand watch this number closely because freemium relies on a small share of free users covering the cost of serving everyone else. Even a fraction of a percent matters at scale, so understanding and nudging this rate upward has a large effect on revenue. It also shapes strategy, since a low rate may mean your free tier is too generous and gives little reason to upgrade, while a healthy rate confirms your paid features land at the right moment. A few practices keep the figure useful. First, be clear about the period and the user base you are measuring, whether it is all free users ever or active free users in a window, and stay consistent. Second, look at what drives upgrades, because hitting usage limits, needing a team feature or reaching a value milestone often trigger the move to paid. Third, segment by cohort and acquisition channel, as users who arrive with strong intent convert very differently from casual sign ups. Tuning your free tier limits and upgrade prompts can shift this number, so pair it with trial conversion and activation metrics to see the full freemium picture.

Conversion rate = upgrades / free users. Estimate only, not financial or tax advice.

How it works

The calculator divides the number of paid upgrades by the number of free users and shows it as a percentage. The stayed free figure is the free users minus the upgrades, so you can see how many remain on the free plan.

Worked example

With 5,000 free users and 150 paid upgrades, dividing 150 by 5,000 gives 0.03, which is a free to paid conversion rate of 3.0 percent. The remaining 4,850 users stayed on the free plan.
