Enter a length in decimeters or metres to convert it instantly both ways. This calculator divides or multiplies by 10 using the exact SI formula, then shows the result in metres, decimeters and centimetres for reference.
| Decimeters (dm) | Meters (m) |
|---|
The decimeter (dm) is a metric unit of length equal to one tenth of a metre. The prefix "deci" comes from the Latin word for "tenth". To convert a length from decimeters to metres, divide the value by 10:
Meters = Decimeters ÷ 10
To convert metres to decimeters, multiply by 10:
Decimeters = Meters × 10
For example, 10 decimeters equals 1 metre, and 25 decimeters equals 2.5 metres. Going the other way, 1 metre equals 10 decimeters, and 3.5 metres equals 35 decimeters.
| Unit | Symbol | Value in Metres |
|---|---|---|
| Kilometre | km | 1,000 m |
| Metre | m | 1 m |
| Decimetre | dm | 0.1 m |
| Centimetre | cm | 0.01 m |
| Millimetre | mm | 0.001 m |
The decimetre sits between the centimetre and the metre. It is equal to 10 centimetres or 100 millimetres. While it is a valid SI unit, it is used far less often in everyday NZ measurement than millimetres, centimetres, and metres.
New Zealand uses the metric system for all official measurement, but everyday practice tends to skip the decimeter in favour of centimetres or metres. Building plans, fabric lengths, and most household measurements are given in millimetres or metres, while smaller everyday items are usually measured in centimetres. The decimeter appears mostly in science and engineering references, some European product specifications, and school maths curricula that teach the full metric prefix scale.
How many meters is 1 decimeter?
1 decimeter equals 0.1 metres. Divide the number of decimeters by 10 to get metres.
How do you convert meters to decimeters?
Multiply the number of metres by 10. For example, 3 metres equals 30 decimeters.
Where is the decimeter used in New Zealand?
Rarely in everyday life. NZ measurements are usually given in millimetres, centimetres, metres, or kilometres, with the decimeter appearing mainly in scientific or educational contexts.

This converter uses the exact SI definition of the decimeter (1 dm = 0.1 m). Results are mathematically exact, not estimates.
