Kilogram to Pound Converter
This converter turns kilograms into pounds, and into the stone-and-pounds form that many New Zealanders still use for body weight, then back again. New Zealand went metric in the 1970s, so kilograms are what a doctor, a gym and a set of bathroom scales will use here. Pounds and stone persist anyway, partly through older habit and partly because so much fitness and health content is written for American and British audiences. A weight-training programme might quote pounds, a recipe might quote ounces, and a relative may still describe a newborn in pounds and ounces. The conversion is exact rather than approximate: since 1959 the international avoirdupois pound has been defined as exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, which makes one kilogram exactly 2.20462262184878 pounds. That definition is why you can convert back and forth without accumulating error. The calculator shows pounds on their own, the stone-and-pounds breakdown used for body weight in Britain and here, and ounces for smaller amounts such as ingredients or a baby's birth weight, so you do not have to do the second step of dividing pounds by fourteen in your head.
Based on the international avoirdupois pound of exactly 0.45359237 kg, in use since 1959. The stone is 14 pounds.
How it works
Everything is converted to kilograms first, then out again. One pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg by international agreement, so one kilogram is 1 divided by 0.45359237, which is 2.20462262184878 pounds. A stone is exactly 14 pounds and an ounce is exactly one sixteenth of a pound. Because all of these are definitions rather than measurements, converting from kilograms to pounds and back returns the number you started with.
Worked example
Take the default of 70 kilograms. Multiply by 2.20462262 to get 154.32 pounds. To express that as stone, divide by 14: 154.32 divided by 14 is 11 with 0.32 left over, so 11 stone 0.3 pounds. In ounces, multiply the pounds by 16: 154.32 x 16 is about 2,469.2 ounces. Going the other way, someone who weighs 165 pounds is 165 x 0.45359237, or about 74.8 kilograms.
