Dog Age Calculator

How old is your dog in human terms? This calculator answers that using the science-based formula, not the old and surprisingly inaccurate rule of simply multiplying by seven. Enter your dog's age in years and it returns the human-equivalent age, updating as you type, giving you a far more realistic sense of what life stage your companion is really at. The method comes from a 2019 study by researchers who compared chemical changes in the DNA of dogs and humans as they age, and found that the relationship is not a straight line at all but a logarithmic curve. Dogs race through their early development, so a one year old dog is already like a young adult human in their late twenties, then the ageing slows down, with each later dog year adding fewer human years than the one before. The formula captures this neatly: the human age is about sixteen times the natural logarithm of the dog's age, plus thirty-one. That is why the familiar times-seven shortcut goes so wrong, badly underestimating a young dog's maturity and misjudging the pace of ageing throughout life. Knowing your dog's true life stage is more than a curiosity, because it shapes sensible decisions about diet, exercise, vaccinations and health checks, and helps you recognise when your dog is moving into its senior years and may need extra care. Breed and size matter too, with smaller dogs generally living longer than large ones, so treat the result as a well-grounded general guide rather than an exact figure, and let your vet tailor advice to your particular dog. That makes the tool genuinely useful for any dog owner curious about their pet, and a great, myth-busting talking point. The formula and a worked example are explained clearly below.

human-equivalent years

Based on the 2019 epigenetic formula (16 x ln(age) + 31), most reliable for dogs aged 1 and over. A general guide; your vet can advise for your breed.

How it works

The human-equivalent age is 16 times the natural logarithm of the dog's age in years, plus 31. The natural log makes early years count for a lot and later years for less, matching how dogs actually age. The formula is designed for dogs aged about 1 and older; very young puppies age even faster than it predicts.

Worked example

For a 5 year old dog: the natural log of 5 is about 1.609, times 16 is about 25.7, plus 31 gives about 56.7. So a 5 year old dog is roughly equivalent to a 57 year old person, far more than the 35 the old times-seven rule would suggest.
