Cat Age Calculator

How old is your cat in human terms? This calculator answers that using the standard scale that vets actually use, which is far more accurate than the old idea of multiplying by seven. Enter your cat's age in years and it returns the human-equivalent age along with a sense of its life stage, updating as you type. The reason a simple multiplier fails is that cats do not age at a steady pace. They grow up extremely fast at first: a one year old cat is already a young adult, roughly fifteen in human years, and by the end of the second year it has reached about twenty-four, having packed two decades of human development into two cat years. After that the ageing settles into a gentler rhythm, with each additional cat year counting for about four human years, so the curve rises steeply and then levels off. That is why kittens seem to mature almost overnight while older cats age slowly and gracefully. Knowing your cat's true life stage is genuinely useful, because it shapes sensible decisions about diet, play, vaccinations and vet checks, and helps you spot when your companion is moving from adulthood into its mature, senior and geriatric years, when more frequent health checks pay off. As a rough guide, cats are mature from about seven, senior from around eleven, and geriatric from about fifteen, and with good care, especially indoors, many live well into their late teens and beyond. Breed and lifestyle play a part too, so treat the figure as a well-grounded guide rather than an exact number, and let your vet tailor advice to your cat. That makes the tool a fun, myth-busting check for any cat owner. The scale and a worked example are explained clearly below.

Standard veterinary scale: 15 years for the first year, 9 for the second (24 by age 2), then about 4 per year. A general guide; your vet can advise.

How it works

The first cat year counts as 15 human years. The second adds 9, reaching 24 by age two. Each year after that adds 4 human years. So for a cat older than two, the human age is 24 plus 4 times the years beyond two. A kitten under one is scaled in proportion.

Worked example

For a 5 year old cat: the first two years give 24 human years, and the remaining 3 years add 3 times 4, which is 12. So the cat is about 24 plus 12, which is 36 in human years.
