How do you convert a bird's age to human years?

Because birds vary enormously in how long they live, the fairest way is to scale their age against their species lifespan. Divide the bird's age by the typical lifespan for its species, then multiply by a human reference lifespan of about 80 years. A budgie of 3 with a typical lifespan of 8 years is 3 divided by 8 times 80, which is about 30 in human terms.

Why is there no single bird age formula?

Unlike dogs, birds have no widely accepted ageing study, and lifespans range from about 7 years for a small finch to 60 or more for a large cockatoo. A rule that works for a budgie would be badly wrong for a macaw. Scaling each bird against its own species lifespan gives a consistent, if approximate, comparison across very different birds.

How it works

The calculator works on the idea that a bird a quarter of the way through its natural lifespan is roughly a quarter of the way through a human life. It divides your bird's age by the typical lifespan for its species to get the fraction of life used, then multiplies that fraction by a human reference lifespan of 80 years to express it in human terms. The same fraction sets the life stage: under 15 percent is juvenile, up to about three quarters is adult, and beyond that is senior. Because every species is scaled against its own lifespan, a budgie and a macaw of the same human-equivalent age are at comparable points in their lives even though their actual ages differ by decades.

Worked example

Take a three year old budgerigar with a typical lifespan of 8 years. The fraction of life used is 3 divided by 8, which is 0.375, or about 38 percent. Multiply that fraction by the human reference of 80 years and you get 3 times 80 divided by 8, which is 30 human years. At 38 percent of its lifespan the budgie is a healthy adult. A three year old cockatoo, with its 60 year lifespan, would instead be 3 times 80 divided by 60, just 4 human years, a young juvenile, which shows why scaling by species matters so much.
