This calculator turns an annual salary into the hourly rate it works out to, so you can see what your yearly pay really means for every hour you put in. It is the reverse of quoting an hourly wage: a salary hides how much you earn per hour, and that number is what you need when you compare a salaried role against contract or casual work quoted by the hour, weigh up whether extra unpaid hours are worth it, or simply want a fair sense of what your time is worth. You enter your gross annual salary, the hours you usually work each week, and the number of weeks you work in a year, and the calculator divides the salary by your total annual hours to give the hourly rate. It also shows your pay per week and per standard eight-hour day so you can picture the same salary in different ways. The default of 40 hours a week over 52 weeks is the usual full-time assumption of 2,080 hours a year, but you can lower the weeks if you take unpaid leave or only work part of the year, or change the hours if your week is longer or shorter than the standard. Every figure is gross, before PAYE tax, the ACC levy, KiwiSaver and any student loan, so your take-home rate will be lower: use the PAYE calculator to see what lands in your account. It is a quick way to value your time and compare pay quoted in different ways.

How it works
The hourly rate is the annual salary divided by the hours you work in a year. Your yearly hours are your hours per week multiplied by the weeks you work per year, so 40 hours over 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. Weekly pay is the salary divided by the weeks worked, and the per-day figure is eight hours at the hourly rate. Lower the weeks if you take unpaid time off, or change the hours to match a longer or shorter week, and the rate updates to reflect the hours you actually work.
Worked example
On a $70,000 salary working 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, you work 2,080 hours in the year. Dividing 70,000 by 2,080 gives about $33.65 an hour before tax. The same salary is $1,346.15 a week, since 70,000 divided by 52 is that amount, and about $269.23 for a standard eight-hour day. If you only worked 48 weeks a year, your yearly hours would drop to 1,920 and the hourly rate would rise to about $36.46, because the same salary is spread over fewer hours.
