This calculator works out what a babysitter will cost for an evening or a day, based on the hourly rate, the hours worked, and how many children are being looked after. Arranging a sitter should be simple, but the final figure depends on a few moving parts, and it helps both parents and sitters to agree on a clear, fair amount up front. The starting point is the hourly rate, which varies with the sitter's experience, the time of day, and local norms. On top of that, many sitters charge a little extra for each additional child, since minding two or three children is more work and responsibility than minding one. Multiply the effective rate by the number of hours and you have the cost for the session. This tool does the arithmetic so there are no awkward surprises. You enter the base hourly rate, the number of hours, the surcharge per additional child, and how many children there are, and the calculator returns the total cost, the effective hourly rate once the extra-child surcharge is included, and a per-child breakdown. The results update as you type, so you can see how a longer night or an extra child changes the bill. Use it to budget for a night out, to agree a fair rate with a sitter, or, if you are the sitter, to quote a clear price. It is good practice to confirm the rate, any surcharge, and how rounding or part-hours are handled before the booking, so everyone is happy when it comes time to settle up.
Cost = (base rate + extra per child x (children - 1)) x hours. Agree the rate, any surcharge and how part-hours are handled before the booking.
The effective hourly rate is the base rate plus the per-child surcharge applied to each child beyond the first. That effective rate is multiplied by the number of hours to give the total cost. The per-child figure simply divides the total evenly by the number of children for reference.
At a base rate of $22 an hour, with a $3 surcharge per additional child, minding 2 children lifts the effective rate to $25 an hour. Over 5 hours that is a total of $125. Split across the 2 children, that works out to $62.50 each for the session.
