Cost of Raising a Child Calculator

This calculator estimates the total cost of raising a child to the age of 18 in New Zealand, turning a weekly spend into the eye-watering lifetime figure that helps families plan, budget and prepare. Children are wonderful and expensive, and most parents only ever see the cost in weekly dribs and drabs, never the total, which makes it hard to plan for. Studies and surveys in New Zealand have put the cost of raising a child to 18 anywhere from around $150,000 to well over $300,000 depending on income, choices and childcare, but your own number depends entirely on how you live. This tool lets you build the estimate from your own weekly spending rather than a one-size-fits-all average. You enter the typical amount you spend on the child each week, food, clothing, activities, a share of housing and power, transport and the rest, the number of years to project, usually 18, and any large one-off costs such as childcare, private schooling, braces or a first car. The calculator returns the total cost over those years, plus yearly, monthly and weekly figures so you can see it from every angle. Use it to budget for a new baby, to weigh up childcare and schooling choices, to set a savings goal, or simply to understand where the money goes. Remember that government support such as Working for Families, Best Start and childcare subsidies can offset a meaningful part of these costs, so factor those in separately. Costs also rise as children get older, so a weekly average across all the years works best. This is a planning estimate to bring the big number into focus.

Build from your own weekly spend. Working for Families, Best Start and childcare subsidies can offset a lot. A planning estimate.

How it works

The total is your weekly cost multiplied by 52 weeks and by the number of years, plus any one-off costs you add. The yearly figure is the total divided by the years, the monthly figure divides the yearly by 12, and the weekly figure shows your input plus any spread of one-off costs.

Worked example

At $250 a week, a child costs $13,000 a year, and over 18 years about $234,000. Adding $30,000 of one-off costs such as childcare and braces lifts the total to $264,000. The figure is large, which is why building it from your real weekly spend, and offsetting Working for Families support, gives a more useful picture than a national average.
