Acceptance Rate Calculator

This acceptance rate calculator turns a pile of applications and a smaller pile of offers into the numbers people actually quote: the acceptance rate as a percentage, the rejection rate, and the odds of success expressed as 1 in N. Enter the total number of applications received and the number of applicants who were accepted, and the calculator divides one by the other to show what share of the pool got through. It works for anything with a selection step: university and limited-entry programmes such as medicine, law or engineering, scholarship rounds, job openings, rental applications, accelerator intakes, creator funds, even a club with a waiting list. Recruiters and admissions teams use it in the other direction, checking how selective a round really was once the offers have gone out. Remember that a published acceptance rate is an average across every applicant, so it says more about how competitive the pool is than about your individual chances, which depend on how well you meet the entry criteria. Use the odds figure to keep perspective: a 12.5 percent rate sounds brutal, but 1 in 8 also tells you that a sensible list of backup options keeps the overall plan safe. Pair it with our probability tools to combine several applications.

The rate is an average across the whole applicant pool. Your personal chances depend on how you compare against the entry criteria, not just on the headline percentage. Waitlist offers and deferred entries can blur the count, so check how the institution defines an offer.

How it works

The acceptance rate is the number of applicants accepted divided by the total number of applications, multiplied by 100. The rejection rate is simply the remainder: 100 minus the acceptance rate, and the rejected count is total applications minus offers. The odds figure divides total applications by acceptances, so a 12.5 percent rate becomes 1 in 8, which many people find easier to feel than a percentage. All three numbers describe the same selection step from different angles. If you are comparing programmes or employers, make sure each is counting the same things: some quote offers made against completed applications, others quote enrolments against every expression of interest, and the two versions can be far apart for the same intake.

Worked example

A limited-entry programme receives 2,400 applications and accepts 300 of them. The acceptance rate is 300 divided by 2,400, which is 0.125, multiplied by 100 for 12.5 percent. That leaves 2,400 minus 300, which is 2,100 rejected applicants, a rejection rate of 87.5 percent. The odds are 2,400 divided by 300, which is 1 in 8. If the same programme grew to 3,000 applications the following year while keeping 300 places, the rate would fall to 10 percent and the odds would lengthen to 1 in 10, even though the programme itself had not changed at all.
