Grade Calculator

This grade calculator works out your current weighted grade from the assessments you have completed, then tells you exactly what you need on the remaining assessments or the final exam to reach your target grade. Enter the mark and weight for each completed assessment, an essay worth 20 percent, a test worth 25 percent, and so on, and the calculator weights each mark by its share of the course to produce your current grade. It then takes your target grade, looks at how much of the course is still to be marked, and calculates the mark you need across that remaining weight, telling you plainly whether the target is still achievable, already secured, or out of reach. Students at school, polytechnic and university use it during the semester to keep track of where a course sits and to decide how much a final exam really matters. It works for any marking scheme that uses percentages and weights, which covers most NZ university courses, and pairs with our NCEA and GPA tools for credit-based and grade-point systems. Enter marks as percentages, keep the weights adding up to no more than 100, and check your course outline for the letter grade boundaries, because those vary between institutions.

To finish on 75% overall you need to average 77.1% across the remaining 40% of the course. Achievable with a strong final.

Marks and weights are percentages; weights should total no more than 100. Letter grade boundaries differ between institutions, so check your course outline. Estimate only.

How it works

Your current grade is the weighted average of every assessment entered: each mark is multiplied by its weight, the results are added, and the total is divided by the weight marked so far. The mark needed on the rest of the course comes from the gap between your target and the points already banked: target times 100, minus the weighted points earned, divided by the remaining weight. If the answer is over 100 the target is no longer reachable; if it is zero or below, the target is already secured no matter what happens in the final.

Worked example

You have three marks back: 78% on an assignment worth 20%, 65% on a test worth 25%, and 82% on a lab report worth 15%. That is 60% of the course marked, and your weighted grade is (78x20 + 65x25 + 82x15) / 60, which is about 73.6%. To finish on 75% overall you need (75x100 - 4,415) / 40, which is about 77.1% averaged across the remaining 40% of the course, achievable with a strong exam. To secure just a pass at 50%, the same formula shows you need about 14.6%, so the pass is effectively banked.
