This calculator totals the back-to-school cost for your family, adding up stationery, uniform and all the other start-of-year expenses, per child and across as many children as you have. The start of the school year brings a wave of costs that arrive all at once, and they are easy to underestimate until the receipts pile up. There is the stationery list, often long and specific, the uniform and PE gear, school shoes that growing feet quickly outgrow, a sturdy bag, and increasingly a device or technology contribution as schools move to digital learning. On top of those sit the school donation, sometimes still requested, and the activity, sports and trip costs that come early in the year. For a family with more than one child, the total can be a serious dent in the February budget. This tool helps you plan for it. You enter your estimated cost for each category for one child, and the number of children, and the calculator gives the cost per child, the total across all your children, and the biggest single category, so you can see where to focus any savings. The results update as you type, letting you adjust each line as you price things up. Use it to budget for the new school year, to spread the cost by saving ahead, or to compare buying new against reusing and buying second-hand. Buying stationery in bulk, reusing last year's gear, and looking out for second-hand uniforms are all good ways to bring the total down. Planning early takes the sting out of the back-to-school season.
Total = (sum of all categories) x number of children. Buying in bulk, reusing gear and second-hand uniforms can cut the total. Donations are voluntary.
The calculator adds together every category for a single child, stationery, uniform, shoes, bag, technology, activities and the school donation, to get the cost per child. It multiplies that by the number of children for the family total, and identifies the single largest category so you can see where the money is going.
For one child: $120 stationery, $250 uniform, $90 shoes, $60 bag, $200 technology, $150 activities and a $120 donation add up to $990. Across 2 children that is a total of $1,980 for the start of the school year, with the uniform the largest single category to plan for.
