Days Until Calculator
This counts forward from today to a date you choose. It differs from a days between dates calculator in one way that matters: the start is always now, so the answer changes every day and the page is a countdown rather than a measurement. That is the right shape for the questions people actually ask it, which are almost always about something approaching. How long until the tenancy ends, until the fixed rate rolls over, until the term deposit matures, until the baby is due, until the deadline. Alongside the plain day count you get the working days remaining, which is the number that matters if the thing you are counting towards needs work done before it, and the number of full weeks. There is also a count of pay fortnights, since a great many New Zealand deadlines are really questions about how many more paydays there are before the money is needed. If you pick a date in the past the calculator counts backwards instead and tells you how long ago it was, because the same page gets used both ways and refusing to answer would be unhelpful. How it works
Today is taken at midnight so partial days do not distort the count, and the target date is read the same way. The difference in milliseconds divided by 86,400,000 gives the days. Working days are counted by stepping through the period and skipping Saturdays and Sundays. Full weeks is the day count divided by seven, rounded down. Pay periods divides by the length of your cycle, so a fortnightly cycle divides by 14. Approximate months divide by 30.44, the average month length across a four year cycle.
Worked example
Suppose today is 1 September and you pick 1 December. That is 91 days away. Stepping through and skipping weekends leaves about 65 working days, which is the figure that matters if you have work to finish first. Ninety-one days is 13 full weeks, and on a fortnightly cycle that is about 6 more paydays before the date arrives. Because the count starts from today, opening the same page a week later would show 84 days rather than 91.
