Batting Average Calculator
This batting average calculator works out a cricketer's batting average, the standard measure of how many runs they score for each time they are dismissed. Enter the total runs scored, the number of innings batted and the number of not outs, and the calculator subtracts the not outs from the innings to find the dismissals, then divides the runs by those dismissals to give the average. Because not outs are runs kept without giving your wicket away, they lift the average above the simple runs per innings, which is why a batter who is often not out can average well ahead of their raw scoring rate. The tool suits players, coaches, scorers and fans tracking a season, a career or a single tournament across school, club, grade and representative cricket. Enter whole numbers for innings and not outs, keep not outs no greater than innings, and read the average as runs per dismissal.
1,400 runs across 40 innings with 5 not outs means 35 dismissals, so the batting average is 40.00 runs per dismissal, higher than the 35.00 runs per innings because not outs do not count as a dismissal.
Uses the cricket definition: average equals runs divided by dismissals, where dismissals equal innings minus not outs. A batter with no dismissals has no defined average.
How it works
The number of dismissals is the innings batted minus the not outs, because a not out innings does not end in your wicket. The batting average is the total runs divided by those dismissals. Runs per innings, shown alongside, simply divides the runs by every innings and ignores not outs, so it is always the same or lower than the average. If a batter has never been dismissed the average is undefined, since you cannot divide by zero.
Worked example
A batter has scored 1,400 runs in 40 innings and finished not out 5 times. The dismissals are 40 minus 5, which is 35. The batting average is 1,400 divided by 35, which is 40.00 runs per dismissal. Their runs per innings is 1,400 divided by 40, which is 35.00, so the 5 not outs have lifted the average by 5 runs. If they had no not outs, the average and the runs per innings would both be 35.00.
