The ACC Levy (Self-Employed) Calculator gives New Zealand sole traders and contractors a quick estimate of the annual ACC levy they will pay on their self-employed earnings. If you are self-employed, ACC charges a levy based on your liable income, which is your active income from self-employment, and the rate you pay depends on the risk of your occupation as well as a flat Earners levy that everyone pays. Liable income is capped at a maximum each year and has a minimum that applies if you work full time, so very high or very low earnings are adjusted to sit within those bounds. You enter your liable income for the year and the combined levy rate per $100 that ACC has set for your classification unit, and the tool multiplies them to estimate your total annual levy. Sole traders, contractors, tradespeople, and their advisers use it to budget for the ACC invoice that arrives after the tax year and to compare how different income levels change the bill. A few pointers help. Find your classification unit and its rate on your ACC paperwork or the ACC website, since office-based work is charged far less than higher-risk trades. Add the Work levy and Earners levy rates together so the per $100 figure reflects the full charge. Keep in mind that the minimum and maximum liable income thresholds change each year and that CoverPlus Extra can alter how your cover works. This calculator is a planning estimate rather than your official ACC assessment, but it helps you set aside the right amount and avoid a surprise when the invoice lands.
Levy = liable income / 100 x rate per $100. Estimate only, not financial or tax advice.
The tool divides your liable income by 100 to get the number of $100 units, then multiplies by your combined levy rate per $100. The result is your estimated annual ACC levy covering the Work and Earners components together.
With liable income of $70,000 and a combined rate of $0.79 per $100, there are 700 units of $100. Multiplying 700 by $0.79 gives an estimated annual levy of $553.00.
