Enter the floor area of the room or space and the cooling load factor in BTU per hour per square foot, and the calculator multiplies the two to get the total cooling capacity, then divides by 12,000 to convert that into tons, since one ton of cooling equals exactly 12,000 BTU per hour. It also shows the capacity in kilowatts and rounds up to the nearest standard half ton size, because units are built in fixed steps such as 1.5, 2 and 2.5 tons and you generally do not want to be caught undersized. The default load factor of 20 BTU per hour per square foot reflects the common rule of thumb of one ton for every 600 square feet, which suits a typical room with average sun and ceiling height. Bump it up for sunny, poorly insulated or high ceilinged spaces and down for shaded, well sealed ones. The total capacity is 600 multiplied by 20, which is 12,000 BTU per hour. Dividing by 12,000 gives exactly 1.0 ton, and dividing 12,000 by 3,412 gives about 3.52 kW. Since 1.0 is already a standard size, the nearest standard size is also 1.0 ton. Double the room to 1,200 square feet and the capacity rises to 24,000 BTU per hour, which is 2.0 tons, while a sunnier room at 25 BTU per square foot over the same 1,200 square feet would need 30,000 BTU per hour, or 2.5 tons.
