This calculator builds a job quote from the ground up, combining labour, materials, a markup on materials, an overhead and profit margin, and GST, so tradies and small contractors can price work quickly and confidently. Quoting is where many good trades businesses leave money on the table, either by underpricing labour, forgetting to mark up materials, or quoting a figure that does not cover overheads and leaves no profit. A reliable quote needs to account for all of these, and this tool lays them out clearly. You enter the labour hours the job will take and your charge-out rate, the cost of materials, the percentage markup you apply to those materials to cover handling and your buying expertise, and an overhead and profit margin percentage that covers your business costs and the return you need to make. The calculator works out the labour cost, the marked-up materials, the subtotal before tax, the GST at 15 percent, and the final quote to give the customer. The results update as you type, so you can adjust the margin or hours and immediately see the effect on the bottom line. Use it to price jobs on the spot, to make sure every quote covers your real costs, or to check that a fixed-price job is worth taking. Consistent, properly loaded quoting is one of the simplest ways to lift the profitability of a trades business. The figures are a pricing aid; your actual invoice should reflect your real costs, agreed scope and any variations, and GST applies only if you are registered.
Quote = (labour + materials x markup) x (1 + margin), plus 15% GST. GST applies only if you are GST-registered. A pricing aid, not a binding quote.
Labour is hours times your charge-out rate. Materials are increased by your markup percentage. These are added to a subtotal, which is then increased by your overhead and profit margin. Finally, GST of 15 percent is added to reach the total quote the customer pays. Each component is shown so you can see where the price comes from.
A 16 hour job at $85 an hour is $1,360 of labour. Materials of $900 with a 15 percent markup become $1,035. That subtotal of $2,395, increased by a 10 percent margin, is $2,634.50 before tax. Adding 15 percent GST of $395.18 gives a total quote of $3,029.68.
