Reverse Tip Calculator

This calculator works backwards from a total bill to separate out the tip, telling you the original pre-tip amount, the dollar value of the tip, and the tip percentage. Most tip calculators add a tip to a bill, but sometimes you have the final total and need to reverse the maths: checking a receipt where a tip or service charge was already added, splitting a tipped total fairly between people, sorting out an expense claim where the tip needs to be itemised, or simply working out what percentage was added to a bill. While tipping is not customary in New Zealand the way it is overseas, it does appear on some hospitality bills, on travel, and increasingly on card terminals that prompt for a tip, so being able to unpick a total is genuinely useful. You enter the total amount you paid, the tip percentage that was included, and the number of people sharing, and the calculator returns the pre-tip amount, the tip in dollars, and the cost per person for the full total. The key idea is that the total equals the original bill plus the tip percentage of it, so to reverse it you divide the total by one plus the tip rate rather than simply subtracting the percentage, which is a common mistake that gives the wrong answer. Use it to verify a charge, to settle who owes what when a group splits a tipped bill, or to convert an overseas receipt back to the base price. The pre-tip amount and the tip always add back to the total you entered. This is an exact calculation to take the guesswork out of a tipped bill.

$
$100.00
pre-tip amount
Tip included$15.00
Tip rate15%
Per person$115.00

To reverse a tip, divide by one plus the tip rate, not subtract the percentage. Pre-tip plus tip add back to the total. An exact calculation.

How it works

The total is the pre-tip bill plus the tip percentage of that bill. So the pre-tip amount is the total divided by one plus the tip rate. The tip is the total minus the pre-tip amount, and the per-person figure divides the full total by the number of people.

Worked example

If you paid $115 with a 15 percent tip included, the pre-tip amount is $115 divided by 1.15, which is $100, and the tip was $15. Note that simply taking 15 percent off $115 would wrongly give $97.75, because the tip was a percentage of the smaller original bill, not the total.
