This calculator adds up the many separate costs of moving house into one realistic total, with a contingency buffer, so you are not caught out by the true price of shifting. Moving is one of those expenses that seems modest until you list everything involved, and then the numbers climb quickly. The headline cost is usually the removalists or a hire truck, but around it sit a cluster of smaller costs that together can rival it: boxes, tape and packing materials, professional cleaning of the place you are leaving, often required to get a bond back or for settlement, connecting power, internet and other utilities at the new address, and a long tail of incidentals like changing locks, redirecting mail, storage, or taking time off work. This tool helps you capture the lot. You enter your estimated cost for each category, and the calculator totals them, adds a sensible ten percent contingency for the things that always crop up, and shows your grand total along with the largest single item so you know where the money is going. The results update as you type, so you can adjust quotes and see the effect immediately. Use it to build a moving budget, to compare doing it yourself against hiring movers, or to make sure you have set aside enough before the move. Getting a couple of removalist quotes and pricing your utility connections in advance will make the estimate sharper. Building in the contingency is the single best way to avoid a nasty surprise on moving day.
Adds your categories and a 10% contingency for the unexpected. Get removalist quotes and price utility connections in advance for a sharper estimate.
The calculator sums your estimates for removalists, packing, cleaning, utilities and other incidentals to get a subtotal. It then adds a ten percent contingency, a buffer for the extra costs that almost always appear during a move, to give the total. It also flags your single largest cost category.
Removalists at $1,500, packing materials $200, cleaning $350, utility connections $150 and $300 of incidentals add up to a $2,500 subtotal. A ten percent contingency adds $250, giving a total moving cost of $2,750. The removalists are the biggest single item to budget for.
