This calculator estimates what it costs to bring a rental property up to New Zealand's Healthy Homes Standards, the legal requirements landlords must meet for heating, insulation, ventilation, moisture and drainage, and draught stopping. Since the standards became compulsory for private rentals, every landlord must ensure their properties comply, and non-compliance can mean financial penalties as well as cold, damp homes for tenants. The trouble is that the total cost is hard to gauge because it depends on which standards the property already meets and which need work, and the items range from a few hundred dollars for draught stopping to several thousand for a compliant heating appliance or a full insulation upgrade.
