This calculator works out whether your gym membership is actually saving you money, by turning your monthly fee into a real cost per visit and showing how often you need to go to break even. A gym membership feels like good value when you sign up, but its worth depends entirely on how often you use it. Pay a flat monthly fee and go three times a week, and each visit is cheap; pay the same fee and go twice a month, and each visit is costing you a small fortune. The honest way to judge it is to compare the per-visit cost of your membership against what you would pay as a casual visitor, which most gyms also offer. This tool does exactly that. You enter your monthly membership fee, the price of a single casual visit at the same or a similar gym, and how many times you actually go in a typical month. The calculator returns your true cost per visit under the membership, the number of visits per month you need to make for the membership to beat paying casually, how much you save or waste each month compared with casual entry, and the annual cost of the membership. The results update as you type, so you can see honestly where you stand and what would need to change. Use it to decide whether to keep, downgrade or cancel a membership, to set a target number of visits, or simply to motivate yourself to get your money's worth. Being realistic about how often you really go is the key to an accurate answer.
Cost per visit = monthly fee / visits. Break-even visits = monthly fee / casual price. Below break-even, casual entry would be cheaper.
Your cost per visit is the monthly fee divided by the number of visits you make. The break-even point is the monthly fee divided by the casual visit price: go more often than this and the membership wins. The monthly saving compares what those visits would cost casually against the flat fee.
A $60 monthly membership, used 10 times a month, costs $6.00 per visit. With casual entry at $15, you break even at just 4 visits a month. Those 10 visits would cost $150 casually, so the membership saves you $90 a month. The membership costs $720 over a year.
