This calculator estimates the total cost of raising a child from birth to age 18 in New Zealand. Costs are grouped into five life stages: early childhood (0-4), and the school years (5-12 primary, 13-17 secondary). Each category is estimated using published NZ research, Infometrics household expenditure data, Ministry of Social Development (MSD) budgeting figures, and ECE fee surveys.
Costs are expressed in today's dollars and are not inflation-adjusted. Actual future costs will be higher if inflation continues. The calculator adjusts estimates for household income (higher-income families typically spend more on each child), location (main urban centres are more expensive), ECE arrangement, school type, and activity level.
| Category | What is included |
|---|---|
| Childcare / ECE | ECE centre fees above the 20-hour funded entitlement (ages 3-4), full ECE fees for under-twos, nanny costs if selected |
| Schooling | Uniform, stationery, school donations, device/technology levies, school trips and camps, sports fees within school |
| Food | A child's share of the household food bill, including school lunches |
| Clothing | Everyday clothing, shoes, sports and school uniform replacements |
| Healthcare | Dental, optometry, prescription costs, GP visits above the funded entitlement, specialist appointments |
| Transport | Driving to activities, school bus passes, fuel cost attributable to children |
| Housing | Additional space (extra bedroom) cost, either as rent or mortgage interest attributable to the child |
| Activities | Sport, music lessons, arts, cultural activities, holiday programmes, birthday parties |
| Miscellaneous | Toys, tech devices, phone plans (teens), pocket money, gifts |
New Zealand has a range of government support programmes that offset some of the cost of raising children:
The estimated total government support shown in this calculator is approximate and assumes a middle-income household receives Working for Families at a reduced rate. Lower-income families may receive significantly more; higher-income families receive less or nothing.
A 2022 Massey University study estimated the minimum cost of a child in NZ at around $1,085 per month ($13,020 per year) for a preschool child, rising to $1,340 per month ($16,080 per year) for a teenager. This produces a lifetime total of approximately $230,000 to $260,000 at minimum expenditure. Middle-income households in practice spend more because they opt for private childcare, extra activities, and private secondary schools.
An earlier (2015) survey by Westpac New Zealand estimated the total cost of raising a child at around $250,000 to $300,000 in 2015 dollars, with costs having risen materially since due to ECE fee inflation, housing costs, and the overall cost of living. Adjusting for CPI inflation from 2015 to 2026 (approximately 35%), the equivalent today would be $340,000 to $400,000 for middle-income families.
