How This Calculator Works

This calculator applies material-specific cost rates per square metre (for decks) or per linear metre (for fences), based on 2026 NZ trade pricing. Each rate covers timber or cladding, structural framing (joists, bearers, posts, rails), fixings, and professional labour. A 10% waste and fixings allowance is added, along with any railing or balustrade, a building consent estimate where required, and GST at 15%.

The calculation uses three tiers: a low estimate (basic materials, straightforward site), a mid estimate (standard trade job), and a high estimate (premium materials, complex site, or tight access). Regional loading is applied to reflect higher labour costs in main centres and Auckland.

Deck Cost Rates (NZ 2026, per m2, incl. GST)

MaterialLow (per m2)Mid (per m2)High (per m2)Notes
Treated pine (H3.2)$750$1,100$1,500Most common, requires oiling/staining
Hardwood (kwila/vitex)$1,000$1,500$2,200Dense, durable, premium appearance
Composite decking$1,100$1,600$2,400Low maintenance, 25-year life
Western red cedar$900$1,350$2,000Lightweight, natural look

Elevated decks (over 1.5 m above ground) add approximately $300 to $700 per m2 for piles, bracing, and engineering.

Fence Cost Rates (NZ 2026, per linear metre, incl. GST)

TypeLow (per m)Mid (per m)High (per m)Notes
Timber palings (1.8 m)$160$230$310Standard privacy fence, stain-ready
Horizontal cedar slats$240$340$480Modern look, popular in Auckland
Colorsteel / corrugated$180$270$380Low maintenance, long life
Pool glass fencing$320$500$800Must comply with NZS 8500:2006
Chain-link / wire$80$130$190Boundary / rural use

Fence heights above 1.8 m add approximately 15 to 25% to the per-metre rate due to larger posts and additional rails.

What Is Included in the All-In Cost?

The all-in cost does not include earthworks, retaining walls, landscaping around the structure, painting or staining (for decks), or gate hardware for fences. Allow an additional $200 to $600 for a standard timber gate.

Building Consent Rules

Under the Building Act 2004 and the Building (Exempt Building Work) Order 2014, a deck does not require a building consent if it is no more than 1.5 m above the ground at any point and the deck area does not exceed 20 m2 for a single-storey dwelling. If your deck is elevated or large, budget $1,500 to $3,000 for a standard residential consent and allow four to eight weeks for processing with your local council.

Fences do not require building consent unless they exceed 2.5 m in height. Pool fencing must comply with NZS 8500:2006 (Safety Barriers and Fencing around Swimming Pools) and is inspected by the council; a separate pool compliance certificate is required.
