A single cow gestation calculator answers a question about one animal. This answers the herd question, and it runs the other way: you decide when you want calving to start, and everything else follows from that. On a New Zealand dairy farm the planned start of calving is chosen so the herd comes to peak lactation as spring pasture growth arrives, and once that date is fixed the mating date is not a choice at all, it is arithmetic. Count back the gestation length and you have your planned start of mating. Then it runs forward, because the length of mating you set becomes the length of your calving spread: a nine week mating produces a nine week calving, and the cows that get in calf in the first six weeks are the ones that calve in the first six weeks. That is why the six week in calf rate matters so much. It decides whether the herd calves in a compact block, with more cows at peak on spring grass and more days in milk, or trickles through into summer. Shortening mating tightens calving but leaves more cows empty, and this shows both ends of that trade rather than leaving it implicit.
A mating of 9.0 weeks gives a calving spread of the same length. Every week you shorten mating tightens calving by a week and leaves the cows that would have conceived in it empty. The gestation figure here defaults to 282 days, a common herd planning average. Individual cows vary and breed averages differ, so a herd of one breed may be better planned on the figure for that breed.

How it works
The planned start of mating is the gestation length subtracted from the planned start of calving. Mating ends the number of days you set after that. The calving milestones are the same spans carried forward from the start of calving: three weeks, six weeks, and the full mating length, since a cow that conceives on the last day of mating calves a gestation later, which is the length of mating after the first cow. The calving spread and the mating length are therefore the same number of days by construction, and that is the point rather than a coincidence.
Why the six week mark is the one to watch
Because it converts a mating statistic into a date on the calendar. The share of the herd in calf within six weeks of mating starting is the share that will have calved within six weeks of calving starting, and those cows are the ones with the most days in milk and the best chance of getting in calf again next season. A herd that is only half calved at the six week mark is carrying the consequences of the previous mating right through the following summer, and by then nothing can be done about it. Working the calendar backwards from the calving you want is how that gets fixed a year in advance rather than regretted.
Worked example
A herd planning to start calving on 1 August 2027, on a 282 day gestation, needs to start mating on 23 October 2026. A nine week mating of 63 days then runs to 25 December 2026. Carrying those spans forward, the first cycle of cows will have calved by 22 August 2027, the six week mark falls on 12 September 2027, and the last cow to conceive is due on 3 October 2027. Shortening mating to six weeks would pull that last date back to 12 September, tightening the calving block by three weeks, at the cost of every cow that would have conceived in weeks seven to nine.
