Herd Replacement Rate Calculator NZ
Replacement rate is the share of the herd or flock you bring in new each year, and it quietly sets a great deal else: how many replacements you have to rear, how much feed those replacements eat before they earn anything, how hard you can cull, and how old the average working animal is. This works out the rate from your own numbers, converts it into the average working life it implies, and tells you how many replacements next season needs if you want to hold the herd where it is. The herd life figure is the one worth sitting with. If you replace a quarter of the herd every year then the average animal is with you four years, and if that number comes out lower than you expected it usually means animals are leaving for reasons other than age. High replacement is expensive twice over: you rear more, and you lose the older animals that were producing best. It also works the other way, because a rate too low leaves you unable to cull on merit and slowly ageing the herd into a problem. There is no right answer supplied here, because it differs by species, system and how the operation is set up.
More are entering than leaving, so the herd grows by 5 this season. Holding it steady would take 85 replacements rather than 90. Implied herd life is the reciprocal of the rate. It describes a herd in a steady state, so it is a sense check rather than a forecast.
How it works
The rate is replacements entering divided by the herd size. Implied herd life is one divided by that rate, which is what the arithmetic of a steady state gives you: if a quarter of the herd turns over annually, the average animal is present for four years. Animals leaving are culls plus deaths and other losses, and the change in numbers is what enters less what leaves. The replacements needed to hold the herd exactly where it is are simply the number leaving, since anything more grows the herd and anything less shrinks it.
Culling rate is not the same number
Replacement rate counts what comes in and culling rate counts what goes out, and the two only agree when the herd is neither growing nor shrinking. On a herd being built they diverge sharply, and quoting one while meaning the other is a common way for two people to compare figures that were never comparable. Deaths belong in what is leaving but not in what was culled, which is a second reason the numbers separate: a herd with heavy losses can show a high replacement rate alongside a modest culling rate, and that gap is itself the thing worth looking at.
Worked example
A herd of 400 taking in 90 replacements has a replacement rate of 22.5 percent, which implies an average working life of 4.4 years. Over the same season 78 were culled and 7 were lost, so 85 left in total and the herd grows by 5. Holding the herd at 400 would have needed 85 replacements rather than 90. If those 90 were reared rather than bought, five animals were reared and fed for a year longer than the herd actually required, which is a real cost even though nothing about it shows up as a loss anywhere.
