Blood Donor Calculator

This blood donor calculator works out the earliest date you can give again and how many times a year you can donate, based on the type of donation and the day you last rolled up your sleeve. Different donations need different recovery times: whole blood takes the longest because your body has to rebuild red cells and iron stores, while plasma and platelets can be given far more often because those parts are replaced quickly. Enter the date of your last donation and choose whether it was whole blood, plasma or platelets, and the calculator adds the standard minimum interval to give you the earliest next eligible date, along with a guide to how many donations that spacing allows across a year. Regular donors use it to plan the next visit and to see roughly how much they can give over twelve months. The intervals here are the usual minimum gaps rather than a personal clearance: your actual eligibility also depends on your health, iron levels, recent travel, tattoos and other factors that only the blood service can check. Treat the date as the soonest you could be eligible, then book through NZ Blood, who will confirm you are good to go on the day.

A whole blood donation needs a gap of 84 days, so after 1 May 2026 the earliest you can give again is 24 July 2026, allowing up to 4 donations a year.

These are the usual minimum gaps, not a personal clearance. Your eligibility also depends on health, iron levels, travel and more, so confirm with NZ Blood. Not medical advice.

How it works

The calculator takes the date of your last donation and adds the minimum recovery interval for the type of donation you chose. Whole blood uses a 12 week gap, which is 84 days, because red cells and iron take longest to recover. Plasma and platelets use a shorter gap of about two weeks, or 14 days, since those components are replaced quickly. The yearly figure divides 365 days by the interval to show roughly how many donations that spacing allows over a year, before any annual caps the blood service applies.

Worked example

Say you gave whole blood on 1 May 2026. Whole blood needs 84 days between donations, so the calculator adds 84 days to 1 May and returns 24 July 2026 as your earliest next date. Dividing 365 by 84 gives about four, so that spacing allows up to four whole blood donations across a year. If instead you had given plasma, the 14 day gap would make you eligible again on 15 May 2026, allowing many more donations over the year.
