What is my marginal tax rate in New Zealand?

Your marginal tax rate is the rate of income tax on your next dollar of earnings. For 2026/27 New Zealand has five rates: 10.5% on income to $15,600, 17.5% to $53,500, 30% to $78,100, 33% to $180,000, and 39% above $180,000. On a $70,000 salary your marginal rate is 30%, while your effective rate (total tax divided by income) is lower at about 20%.

The difference matters. Your marginal rate tells you how much tax a pay rise, bonus or extra shift will attract. Your effective rate, which is always lower, tells you the share of your whole income that goes to tax. Only the dollars inside the top bracket you reach are taxed at the top rate, because the brackets are progressive.
