What is my marginal tax rate in New Zealand?

Your marginal tax rate is the rate of income tax on your next dollar of earnings. For 2026/27 New Zealand has five rates: 10.5% on income to $15,600, 17.5% to $53,500, 30% to $78,100, 33% to $180,000, and 39% above $180,000. On a $70,000 salary your marginal rate is 30%, while your effective rate (total tax divided by income) is lower at about 20%.

Your marginal tax rate is the rate of income tax charged on the next dollar you earn, not the average rate across your whole income, and knowing it helps you judge the real value of a pay rise, bonus, overtime shift or second job. New Zealand's income tax system is progressive, with five brackets for 2026/27: 10.5% up to $15,600, 17.5% up to $53,500, 30% up to $78,100, 33% up to $180,000, and 39% above that. Only the slice of income inside a given bracket is taxed at that rate, so moving into a higher bracket never lifts your whole income to the new rate. This page explains the difference between your marginal rate, which applies to your next dollar earned, and your effective rate, which is your total tax divided by your total income and always works out lower, since earlier dollars stay taxed at the lower rates below it. The worked example shows how a $70,000 salary sits in the 30% bracket while its effective rate comes out closer to 20%. Once you know where you sit, use the income tax by bracket table to check both rates at any income level, or the income tax calculator and PAYE calculator to work out your own take-home pay in full. Tax thresholds change with each Budget, so always check you are using the rates for the correct year.
