Surface Area Calculator

Surface area is the total area of all the outside faces of a solid object, the amount of material it would take to cover it completely, and it is one of the most practically useful measurements in geometry. Whenever you need to paint a tank, wrap a parcel, clad a column, line a duct, tile a surface, work out heat loss, or order sheet material to skin a shape, surface area is the number you are really after, and this calculator finds it for the five shapes that come up most often: the cube, the rectangular box, the sphere, the cylinder and the cone. Choose a shape and the calculator shows just the dimensions that shape needs, then returns its surface area in square units the moment you type, so there is no clutter and no guessing which formula to use. Each shape has its own neat logic. A cube is six identical squares, a box is three pairs of rectangles, a sphere unwinds into four times the area of its great circle, a cylinder is two circular ends plus a curved side that unrolls into a rectangle, and a cone is its circular base plus a curved surface based on its slant height. The calculator carries the right formula behind each option, including the slant height a cone needs, so you do not have to remember them all. That makes it a dependable everyday tool for tradespeople estimating materials, engineers and designers sizing components, and students learning how three-dimensional shapes are built from simpler areas. Because it recalculates instantly, you can compare shapes and sizes or work backwards to a target. The formulas for every shape and a worked example are set out clearly below.

How it works

A cube of side a has surface area six a squared. A rectangular box of length l, width w and height h has area two times l w plus l h plus w h. A sphere of radius r has area four pi r squared. A cylinder of radius r and height h has area two pi r times r plus h. A cone of radius r and height h has area pi r times r plus the slant height, where the slant height is the square root of r squared plus h squared.

Worked example

A box measuring 4 by 3 by 5 has surface area two times 12 plus 20 plus 15, that is two times 47, which is 94 square units. A cylinder of radius 4 and height 5 has area two pi times 4 times 9, about 226.2 square units.
