Housing costs across Taranaki
Taranaki is centred on New Plymouth, with Stratford and Hāwera as smaller centres and a dairy economy across the rest. Energy and engineering have historically supported incomes above what the region's size would suggest, and housing has stayed comparatively affordable, which produces one of the more comfortable relationships between earnings and housing costs in the country.
This is a region where the ownership rate and the rent figure tell a consistent story rather than pulling against each other. Watch the trend rather than the level: changes in energy sector employment work through to housing here faster than in more diversified regions.
