The RWT on Interest Calculator helps New Zealand savers and investors see how much resident withholding tax is taken from their interest income and how much they actually receive. When a bank or other payer credits you interest, they usually deduct RWT before paying you, at the rate that matches the one you have given them. The available rates line up with the income tax rates of 10.5, 17.5, 30, 33, and 39 percent, and the right one for you depends on your total taxable income for the year. You enter the gross interest earned and choose your RWT rate, and the tool returns the tax withheld and the net interest left in your hand. Savers, term deposit holders, trustees, and accountants use it to reconcile bank statements, to forecast after-tax returns, and to check that the rate on file will not leave a shortfall at year end. A few tips make it more useful. Give your payer your IRD number so RWT is deducted at your chosen rate rather than the higher no-notification rate, and pick a rate that reflects your full income including salary and other earnings. If your RWT rate is lower than your true marginal rate you may have tax to pay when you file, so it can be wise to choose the rate that matches your top band. Compare the net figure here against the headline interest rate to understand your real return, especially when deciding between accounts or term deposits. This is a clear estimate to plan with, not formal tax advice, but it makes the effect of RWT easy to see.
RWT = gross interest x rate. Net interest = gross - RWT. Estimate only, not financial or tax advice.
The tool multiplies your gross interest by the RWT rate you select to find the tax withheld, then subtracts that tax from the gross interest to give the net amount you receive. The rate matches one of the standard income tax rates.
With $1,000 of gross interest and a 33 percent RWT rate, the tax withheld is $1,000 times 0.33, which is $330.00. Subtracting that from $1,000 leaves net interest of $670.00.
