Revenue per Employee Calculator

The Revenue per Employee Calculator gives you a quick, powerful measure of how productively your business turns people into income. You enter total revenue for a period, usually a year, and the number of employees, and the tool divides revenue by headcount to show the average revenue generated per person. It is one of the most widely used efficiency benchmarks because it is simple, hard to game and easy to compare across time and against peers. A rising figure suggests your team is producing more output per head, often through better systems, pricing, automation or focus, while a falling figure can flag overstaffing, weak demand or work that is not converting into revenue. Owners, managers and investors use it to sense check growth, since adding revenue is only impressive if it is not simply the result of hiring at the same pace. It also helps when planning, because it links headcount decisions to the income each new role is expected to support. The metric works best as a trend and a comparison rather than a single number, since a sensible level varies hugely by industry, from low figures in labour intensive services to very high figures in software. Good practice is to use a consistent headcount basis, such as full time equivalents, so part time staff do not distort the result. Compare like with like when benchmarking, ideally against firms in the same sector and stage. Pair it with profit and cash measures too, because high revenue per head still has to translate into margin. Used regularly, it keeps your growth honest and your team sized to the work.

$150,000
Revenue per employee

Revenue per employee = total revenue / number of employees. Estimate only, not financial or tax advice.

How it works

The calculator divides total revenue for the period by the number of employees, ideally measured as full time equivalents. The result is the average revenue produced per person. Tracking the trend shows whether productivity is improving.

Worked example

With $4,800,000 of revenue and 32 full time equivalent employees, revenue per employee is 4,800,000 divided by 32, which is $150,000 per person.
