ppm Concentration Calculator

Parts per million, written ppm, is the everyday language of small concentrations, the units you see on water quality reports, swimming pool test kits, air quality readings, fertiliser labels, food safety limits and laboratory solutions. It expresses how much of one substance is present for every million parts of the whole, which is the natural scale once a concentration becomes too small to talk about comfortably in percent. This calculator works it out from two simple inputs: the amount of solute and the amount of the total solution, entered in the same unit so the units cancel. It then returns the concentration in parts per million, parts per billion for even smaller traces, and percent for when you want the more familiar form, all updating as you type. The maths is just a ratio scaled up: the solute divided by the solution, multiplied by a million. Because the inputs share a unit, you can use grams, milligrams, litres or anything else, as long as both boxes match. For water this lines up neatly with the milligrams per litre that laboratories report, since a litre of water weighs about a kilogram, so 1 mg per litre is essentially 1 ppm, which is why the two are often quoted side by side. Use it to check a pool's chlorine level, interpret a drinking water result, dilute a concentrate to a target strength, or convert between ppm and percent without second-guessing the powers of ten. It is a handy tool for students, lab workers, pool and spa owners, growers and anyone dealing with trace concentrations. The formula and a worked example are set out below.

How it works

The concentration in ppm is the amount of solute divided by the amount of solution, multiplied by one million. Parts per billion multiplies by a thousand million instead, and percent multiplies by a hundred. Because both amounts are in the same unit, the units cancel and only the ratio matters.

Worked example

Dissolve 0.5 g of a substance in 1,000 g of solution. The ratio is 0.5 divided by 1,000, which is 0.0005. Times one million gives 500 ppm. That is 500,000 ppb, or 0.05 percent.
