Number to Words Calculator

This number to words calculator spells a whole number out in plain English, the way you would write it on a cheque or in a formal document. Enter a number and the calculator returns it in words, handling hundreds, thousands, millions and on up to the quadrillions, including negative numbers. Writing numbers in words is useful for cheques, contracts, invoices and teaching young learners how place value maps onto language. The calculator groups the number into threes and names each group, the standard short scale used in New Zealand and most English speaking countries. A worked example and the assumptions are set out below.

The formula

The number is split into groups of three digits from the right. Each group is read as hundreds and tens and ones, then labelled thousand, million, billion and so on, using the short scale.

Worked example

1234 becomes one thousand, two hundred and thirty-four. The number 1000000 becomes one million. Enter 1234 to confirm.
