This calculator answers the question every new block owner asks first: how many animals will my land actually carry. You enter your grazing area, how reliable the rainfall is where you are, and what sort of stock you want, and it returns a realistic number of head, the stock units that represents, and the winter feed gap in kilograms of dry matter. That last figure is the one that matters most and the one nobody mentions when you buy the place. Pasture growth across most of New Zealand falls well below stock demand from roughly May to August, so even a lightly stocked block usually needs hay or baleage to get through, and a block stocked to what the spring flush will support runs out of grass in February and stays out until spring. Size to the winter, not to the spring. The other thing worth saying plainly is that this is an estimate built on district averages, and pasture growth varies more between neighbouring properties than most people expect, driven by aspect, soil, drainage and how the place has been managed. Treat the number as a starting point, watch what your own grass actually does across a full year, and adjust. Being a little understocked on a small block is a much cheaper mistake than being overstocked, because there is no spare paddock to fall back on.

How it works

Your area is converted to hectares and multiplied by a stocking rate for the country and rainfall you chose, which gives the stock units the block will carry across a full year. That total is divided by the stock units one animal of your chosen class represents, which gives the head count. The winter feed gap takes the annual feed demand of those stock units, works out how much falls in the weeks you have said pasture cannot keep up, and applies the share of demand you expect to have to cover. Bales are that gap divided by the dry matter in a typical round hay bale, which is 275 kilograms at 85 percent dry matter. Every one of those inputs is yours to change, and you should change them once you have watched your own paddocks for a season.

Worked example

A four acre block on average pasture in a reliable rainfall district is about 1.62 hectares, and at 6 stock units a hectare it will carry roughly 9.7 stock units across the year. Running breeding ewes at 1 stock unit each, that is about 9 ewes. Over a 12 week winter where pasture meets only 60 percent of demand, those 9.7 stock units need about 492 kilograms of dry matter bought in, which is 3 round hay bales once you round up to whole bales. Nine ewes on four acres sounds conservative to most new owners and is close to right: the same block stocked at 15 ewes looks fine in October and is bare by February.
