This works out when a doe is due to kid from the date she was mated. Goats carry for about 150 days, roughly five months, and the normal kidding window runs from 145 to 155 days. Both ends of that window matter, which is why this marks them rather than giving only the date in the middle. A kid born much before 145 days may be premature and need close attention to survive, and a doe still carrying past 155 days may be facing a complication such as a single kid that has grown too large, so either end is a reason to talk to your vet rather than to keep waiting. Where an individual doe lands inside the window is fairly predictable once you know what she is carrying. Twins and triplets tend to arrive towards the earlier end, while a single kid usually runs longer and is often bigger, which is the combination that makes for a difficult kidding. Breed matters as well: the smaller breeds tend to kid a few days earlier than the large dairy breeds, so a Nigerian Dwarf and a Saanen mated on the same morning will not usually kid on the same day. The gestation length here is editable if your own records point somewhere more specific.

How it works
The calculator adds the gestation length to the mating date and marks five days either side, which is the published 145 to 155 day window against a 150 day average. Those two dates are not a comfort margin, they are the boundaries of what is considered normal, so they are labelled earliest and latest normal rather than earliest and latest likely. If you change the gestation length the window moves with it, keeping the same five days either side.
Worked example
A doe mated on 1 August 2026 and carrying the average 150 days is due to kid on 29 December 2026. The normal window runs from 24 December 2026 to 3 January 2027. If she is scanned carrying twins, expect the earlier half of that window rather than the middle, and if she is carrying a single, the later half and a larger kid. Either way the useful dates to have in the diary are the two ends, because they are what tell you when to start watching and when to stop waiting.
