Downgrade Rate Calculator

The Downgrade Rate Calculator shows what share of your customers moved to a lower plan or cut their spend over a period, expressed as a percentage. You enter the number of customers who downgraded and your total customer count, and the tool divides one by the other to return the downgrade rate, along with the number who held or grew their spend so you can see the balance. Finance teams, customer success leaders and founders watch this figure because downgrades drive contraction revenue, the quiet leak that eats into expansion even when few customers fully churn. A rising downgrade rate is an early warning that value is slipping, pricing has overreached, or a segment is feeling pressure, so catching it early lets you act before it becomes cancellations. To make the number useful, fix a consistent time window, define a downgrade clearly, for example a move to a cheaper plan or a seat reduction beyond a threshold, and apply that definition the same way each period. It is best read next to your upsell and renewal rates, since downgrades offset expansion and a healthy base needs upsell to outweigh contraction. Break the rate down by plan, segment and cohort, because a low overall figure can hide a troubled group, and pair it with reasons captured at the point of downgrade so you can fix root causes rather than just count them. Used consistently, this calculator turns scattered downgrade events into a tracked metric you can set targets against, surface in reviews, and bring down through better onboarding, clearer value, fair pricing and timely outreach to accounts showing signs of pulling back.

Downgrade rate = customers downgraded / total customers. Estimate only, not financial or tax advice.

How it works

The tool divides the number of customers who downgraded by your total customers and multiplies by 100 for a percentage. The held or grew figure is your total minus those who downgraded. A lower rate means fewer customers are cutting their spend.

Worked example

With 18 customers downgraded out of 300 total, the rate is 18 divided by 300, which is 0.06 or 6.0 percent. The number who held or grew their spend is 300 minus 18, which is 282 customers.
