Billable Days Per Year Calculator NZ

Quick answer: Count the weekdays in the year, then take off the public holidays that fall on a weekday, your anniversary day, your leave, sick days and admin days. In 2027, with 4 weeks of leave, 5 sick days and 10 admin days, that leaves 214 billable days, or 1,712 hours at 8 hours a day.

This billable days calculator works out how many days of the year you can actually charge a client for, which is the number every contractor's day rate and income target rests on. A year looks like 260 or so working days, but a good share of them can never be billed. New Zealand's national public holidays take out eleven weekdays in each of 2026, 2027 and 2028 once the ones that fall on a weekend are moved to the following Monday or Tuesday, and your region's anniversary day takes out one more. Then come your own choices: the weeks of leave you take, the days you expect to lose to illness, and the days that go on running the business, such as quoting, invoicing, bookkeeping and finding the next contract. You choose the year, whether to count an anniversary day, your weeks of leave, sick days, admin days and the hours you bill in a day. The calculator counts the weekdays in that year, takes off the public holidays observed on a weekday using the official dates, including the gazetted date for Matariki, and gives you your billable days, your billable hours and the days you are not billing. The leave, sick and admin figures are your own estimates, so set them to match how you really work, not how you would like to.

Anniversary days are regional and the date varies by region, so they are not in the national holiday list. Choosing yes counts one extra weekday off whichever region you are in.

How it works

The calculator walks through every day of the year you choose and counts the Mondays to Fridays. It then counts the national public holidays whose observed date is a weekday. When a holiday such as Waitangi Day or Christmas Day falls on a weekend, its observed date is the weekday it moves to, so it still takes a working day out of the year. Your anniversary day, if you count it, is one more weekday off. Weeks of leave are multiplied by five, then your sick days and admin days are added, and the total days off are taken from the weekdays to give your billable days. Billable hours are those days multiplied by the hours you bill in a day. If your days off add up to more than the weekdays, the result stops at zero.

Worked example

In 2027 there are 261 weekdays. All 11 national public holidays are observed on a weekday that year, and counting an anniversary day brings the public holidays to 12. Four weeks of leave is 20 days, plus 5 sick days and 10 admin days, so 47 days are not billed and 214 are. At 8 hours a day that is 1,712 billable hours.
