Odds Probability Converter
Odds and probability are two different ways of expressing the same underlying likelihood of an event. Probability is a number between 0 and 1 (or 0% and 100%) representing how likely the event is. Odds express the same information as a ratio: odds against are the number of ways the event fails for every one time it succeeds; odds in favour are the number of successes for every failure. Understanding the relationship between the two is essential for anyone working with games of chance, sports results, risk analysis, or statistical decision-making. Odds of 3:1 against mean the event is expected to fail 3 times for every success, so the probability of success is 1 divided by (3+1) = 25%. Conversely, a 25% probability converts to 3:1 against. This converter works in both directions. In odds-to-probability mode you enter the numerator and denominator of a fractional odds expression and choose whether they are odds against or odds in favour. The calculator returns the implied probability as a percentage and its complement. In probability-to-odds mode you enter a percentage and get the equivalent odds both in favour and against, expressed in simplified ratio form. The tool is useful for students studying probability theory, for anyone interpreting bookmakers' or racing odds, and for researchers converting between different ways of expressing likelihood in papers and reports. No specialised background is needed: the converter does all the ratio arithmetic for you.
How it works
In odds-to-probability mode, let A and B be the two numbers in the fractional odds. If the odds are A:B against, the implied probability of success is B / (A+B). If the odds are A:B in favour, the probability is A / (A+B). The complement is 1 minus the probability. The corresponding odds in favour are p : (1-p) and odds against are (1-p) : p, both simplified by dividing by the smaller value. In probability-to-odds mode, the inputs are reversed: enter p% and the same formulas produce the fractional odds both ways.
Worked example
Odds of 3:1 against: probability = 1 / (3+1) = 0.25 = 25.00%. The complement is 75.00%. Odds in favour are 1:3. Odds against are 3:1. These match the default values pre-filled above. In the reverse direction, entering 75% gives odds in favour of 3:1 and odds against of 1:3.
