This calculator converts any fraction to its decimal equivalent and its percentage form in a single step. Converting between fractions and decimals is one of the most practical skills in everyday numeracy, from reading nutrition labels and comparing prices to working through maths assessments and engineering calculations. The method is simple: divide the numerator (the top number) by the denominator (the bottom number). For 3 over 4, that gives 0.75 as a decimal, which is the same as 75 percent. Some fractions divide evenly and produce a terminating decimal that stops after a fixed number of digits, such as 1 over 8 giving 0.125. Others never divide cleanly and produce a recurring decimal where a digit or block of digits repeats forever, such as 1 over 3 giving 0.333... The calculator detects whether the result is terminating or recurring and shows you which, and for recurring decimals it rounds to enough decimal places to make the pattern visible. You enter the numerator and denominator separately, and the calculator returns the decimal result to six decimal places, the equivalent percentage, the fraction type, and the simplified fraction in lowest terms as a cross-check. Negative fractions work too; enter a negative numerator or denominator. The denominator cannot be zero since division by zero is undefined. This tool suits students converting fractions for assignments, anyone comparing quantities expressed differently, and anyone who needs to quickly express a fraction as a usable decimal. Enter your fraction to see the result appear instantly.
Recurring decimals are rounded to 10 decimal places; the repeating pattern is flagged but not shown in full.
The calculator divides the numerator by the denominator using standard division. To determine whether the decimal terminates or recurs, it simplifies the fraction to lowest terms and checks whether the denominator's only prime factors are 2 and 5. If so, the decimal terminates; if not, it recurs. The simplified fraction is found using the Euclidean algorithm to calculate the greatest common divisor, then dividing both numerator and denominator by it. The percentage is simply the decimal multiplied by 100.
Enter a numerator of 3 and a denominator of 4. Dividing 3 by 4 gives 0.75. Multiplying by 100 gives 75%. The simplified fraction of 3/4 is already in lowest terms since the GCD of 3 and 4 is 1. The denominator 4 has only the prime factor 2, so the decimal terminates. These match the pre-filled defaults above.
